When's the best time to visit Tromsø?
Tromsø, often called the "Paris of the North," is a year-round destination with two unique and contrasting seasons.
The winter (November-March) is ideal if you dream of seeing the Northern Lights and experiencing a snow-covered landscape. With average daytime temperatures around -2°C to -4°C, the long, dark nights are perfect for Northern Lights hunting, whale watching (November-January), dog sledding, and a cosy city atmosphere.
The summer (June-August) offers the midnight sun, where the sun never sets. With mild daytime temperatures around 12-16°C, this is the perfect time for mountain hikes with fantastic views, kayaking in the fjords, and experiencing the vibrant festival atmosphere in a city that never sleeps.
Average temperatures throughout the year
Tromsø has a subarctic coastal climate, which means cold, snowy winters and cool summers. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, winter temperatures are milder than in other places at the same latitude. Average daytime temperatures range from -3°C in January at its coldest, to around 16°C in July at its warmest.
Water temperatures
The fjords around Tromsø have large seasonal variations. In summer, the water temperature on the warmest days can reach up to 11-14°C, making a refreshing dip possible for the bravest. In winter, the sea remains ice-free due to the Gulf Stream, with a temperature of around 4-5°C, creating good conditions for the rich marine wildlife.
Precipitation
Tromsø experiences precipitation year-round. In winter, the precipitation falls almost exclusively as snow, with around 10-12 days of precipitation per month, building up a deep snow cover. In summer, the number of rainy days is similar, but as rain showers. The weather can change quickly, so it's always wise to bring a raincoat.
