When's the best time to visit Stavanger?

The Stavanger region offers unique experiences in all seasons but is best known for its summer activities.
The summer is undoubtedly the best time to visit Stavanger, especially if you plan to hike to Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen) or Kjerag. With average daytime temperatures between 13°C and 18°C, and long, bright days, the conditions are ideal for mountain hikes, fjord cruises on the Lysefjord, and enjoying the city life in the Vågen harbour area.
The winter provides a completely different experience. With cooler daytime temperatures around 3-6°C, this is a time to experience the raw nature of Western Norway without the crowds. You can explore the city's many museums, like the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, enjoy the cosy atmosphere of the "Colourful Street" (Fargegaten), and experience the rugged coast in a whole new way.

Average temperatures throughout the year

Stavanger has a typical coastal climate, characterized by mild winters and relatively cool summers. Its proximity to the North Sea means that temperatures rarely get extremely cold in winter or very hot in summer. Average daytime temperatures range from around 3°C in January and February at their coldest, to 18°C in July and August at their warmest.

Water temperatures

The beaches and fjords around Stavanger, such as Solastranden beach, are popular for outdoor activities. In the summer, water temperatures on the warmest days can reach up to 16-18°C, perfect for a refreshing dip. In the winter, the sea remains ice-free, but the temperature drops to a chilly 5-7°C, attracting a growing group of year-round swimmers.

Precipitation

As a city in Western Norway, Stavanger is known for having a good amount of rainfall. In the summer, you can expect around 15-17 days of precipitation per month, but often as shorter showers with sun in between. Autumn and winter are the wettest periods, with an average that can exceed 20-22 days of precipitation per month. A good raincoat is therefore a smart choice no matter when you travel.
