When is the best time to travel to Ålesund?
How you time your trip to this architectural wonder depends on whether you are seeking vibrant summer days or moody autumn fjords, with both seasons offering contrasting coastal atmospheres.
During the bright summer season from June to August, daytime temperatures reach comfortable highs of 15–17°C, providing the perfect climate for ascending the 418 steps to the Aksla viewpoint, taking a historic walk among the town’s iconic Art Nouveau architecture, or boarding a boat to the world-famous Geirangerfjord. For those drawn to the deep, golden colors of the Norwegian autumn, September and October are excellent months to visit, bringing cooler afternoons with daytime temperatures averaging 14–15°C in September and 10°C in October, which is ideal for hiking in the surrounding Sunnmøre Alps with fewer crowds.
Temperature variations throughout the year
Perched on the edge of the Norwegian Sea, Ålesund enjoys a remarkably temperate oceanic climate heavily moderated by the Gulf Stream, which translates to incredibly mild winters and fresh, cool summers. While the change of seasons brings a shift in light and landscape, the actual temperature swings remain relatively narrow throughout the year. On average, standard daytime highs climb from a surprisingly mild 5°C in February—the coldest month—to a peak of 17°C in July and August, which are the warmest months.
Water temperatures
Taking a swim in the ocean surrounding Ålesund’s islands is a brisk, awakening experience deeply rooted in the local maritime way of life. Sea temperatures in the surrounding coastal waters and inner fjords reach their yearly maximums of 13–14°C in late summer, particularly during August, while the chilly winter seas (dropping to 4–5°C) are typically bypassed unless you are a passionate local ice-bather.
Precipitation
Precipitation is a defining element of life on the western coast, keeping the surrounding fjords lush and feeding the dramatic regional waterfalls. During the wetter autumn and winter seasons, Ålesund averages about 18–20 wet days per month, which frequently falls as rain in the town but turns to beautiful snow in the higher peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps. In the summer months, the rainfall is slightly less frequent, registering around 12–14 wet days monthly, typically manifesting as passing showers that roll quickly off the Atlantic.
