Barcelona

Fly to Barcelona, take in the art and architecture – and then spend the weekend skiing. Andorra is an independent principality in the Pyrenees mountain range between France and Spain. It’s known for its ski resorts and duty-free shopping, and it’s only a three-hour drive from Barcelona. Grandvalira is Andorra’s biggest ski resort, a combination of six smaller ski areas, which makes for great variety. Its 100+ pistes offer a range of green, blue, red and black runs, and there are three freestyle parks, too. Don’t fancy driving? Then take a direct bus from Barcelona Airport.

Bergen

Norway’s second-largest city has a small-town charm. It’s known for gorgeous fjords and colourful wharfside architecture, but it’s also a short trip away from the snowy terrain in the surrounding mountains. Fly to Bergen and take the train to Voss, the nearest ski resort less than an hour away. It’s only about 800m above sea level, which is low in altitude compared with what you get in the Alps, but there’s 40km of downhill skiing and 60km of cross-country skiing.

Geneva

If you want snow, fly to Geneva – many of the French Alps’ ski resorts are only a short drive away. The closest is Praz de Lys-Sommand, under an hour’s drive from Geneva. Its gentle terrain is great for beginners and cross-country skiers alike, and it’s one of the quieter resorts. Experts will want to check out Chamonix, over 3,000m above sea level. There are 1,300m vertical black runs from the top of the cable car, plus no shortage of off-piste opportunities for the adventurous; it would be a good idea to book a guide.

Kiruna

Book a flight to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland and you’ll have plenty of skiing options. There is natural snow almost all year round, with a wide choice of untracked terrain and maintained pistes. Visit Kiruna in the winter and you’ll get to enjoy the northern lights, while in late spring you are treated to the midnight sun. Fans of off-piste skiing should check out Riksgränsen, while cross-country skiers will enjoy the Låktaspåret, a 27km trail 1,228 m above sea level with spectacular views of Lake Torneträsk.

Krakow

If you want a little culture to go with your carving, then book a trip to Krakow. Visit Wieliczka, a more than 700-year-old salt mine with over 240km of tunnels. Its winding tunnels prove a magnificent walk, with underground lakes and salt cathedrals dotted along the way. Ready to hit the slopes? Less than two hours away, at the base of the Tatra Mountains, is Zakopane. It’s a sweet mountain town with a mixture of old and new: your holiday snaps will have swanky bars as well as horses and carts.

Malaga

Thinking of Spain’s southern coast might conjure up visions of sandy beaches – but you won’t have to go far to find snow. Fly to Malaga and you could be skiing in the morning and swimming in the afternoon. Sierra Nevada – the ski resort, not the national park – is around two hours’ drive from Malaga. At 2,100m above sea level, with lifts going past 3,000m, it’s the highest spot for winter sports in Spain. The altitude means a long ski season, from late November through to early May.

Milan

Milan may be best known for its fashion, but Cervinia, one of the Alps’ largest skiing destinations, is less than three hours away. With 200km of pistes between Italy and Switzerland, you can ski all day without covering old ground. It’s close to the town of Zermatt, on the other side of the Matterhorn – a romantic place ideal for a day trip.

Munich

Ski resorts are lovely, but they generally lack the variety of activities that big cities offer. That’s why you should consider booking a trip to Munich. You can use the city as a base camp: visit the mountains by train during the day and return for a sauna and an evening in a Bavarian beer hall – while taking in forest views along the way. At 2,962m, Zugspitze is the highest peak in Germany. With over 62km of pistes, it has some of the region's best avalanche-safe backcountry, and is skiable from early autumn until late spring.

Oslo

Want a skiing holiday in Norway but can’t get away for longer than a weekend city break? Then fly to Oslo: it’s one of the few capital cities that offers a complete ski experience inside the city limits. Oslo Vinterpark is the largest ski resort in the area, with 11 ski lifts and 18 slopes of varying difficulties – and just 30 minutes from the city centre. It’s also worth driving two hours north to the picturesque town of Lillehammer, home of the 1994 Winter Olympics.
