As one of the oldest cities in Europe, with traces of settlements from Roman times, one can visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Rila Monastery, the Roman Amphitheater, as well as the Alexander-Nevski Cathedral.

This area offers a large selection of small, pleasant eateries and restaurants, shopping, street entertainment and a vibrant nightlife in the evening. It is also home to the National Palace of Culture, one of Bulgaria's most famous landmarks, which was built to celebrate Bulgaria's 1300th anniversary.

In addition to all the historical sights you can visit, you can also take a hike or bike ride to the scenic Boyana waterfall, or Cherni Vrah, the highest peak on the nearby Vitosha mountain. From this top you get a fantastic view of the city. There are several ways up, and there is also a bus service for parts of the way. At the top you can buy delicious food and drink and it is open all year round.
