Norwegian's 20th anniversary

For 20 years we have made it possible for everyone to fly!

In 2002, the first Norwegian Boeing 737 took off from Oslo airport. This marked the beginning of something new in Norway: affordable flights.

For 20 years we have fulfilled the travel dreams for all kinds of passengers, from the student going home for Christmas, to the young family taking their first beach holiday together, to the 90-year-old grandma who's never been up in the air before. During these two decades, we have continued to offer low prices and smart solutions so that everyone can have the pleasure of flying. Our values also took to the skies across Europe, so even more people could take advantage of our fantastic destinations and great deals.

We'd like to thank everyone who has been with us on the journey so far. Thank you for the first 20 years. We look forward to the next 20.

Did you know?

 A sweet trip

We served apples and traditional Norwegian almond cake,“kransekake”, to all passengers on board our first flight. It was from Oslo to Bergen in 2002.

 Pioneers from the start

We taught Norway’s air travellers to book their flights online. In the autumn of 2002, 20% of our customers used the internet to book a ticket.

 Always the smart option
  • We've always looked for the most innovative solutions for our passengers. We were the first company in the world to sell tickets via SMS in cooperation with Norwegian telecom company, Telenor, in 2004.
  •
 More reasons to celebrate
  • Our loyalty programme, Norwegian Reward, turns 15 years old in 2022. We're constantly adding new ways for our members to earn CashPoints and fly for less.
And the winner is...
  • We have received more than 60 awards and recognitions over the years, including most punctual airline, best low-cost airline, best customer service, most sustainable airline and most innovative company.
  •
 Who is that?
  • The tail fins on our aircraft feature people who have broken boundaries, challenged norms and inspired others - a bit like us!
  •
 The winds of change
  • Our pilots use smart wind and weather data to optimise our flights and save emissions, and as time goes on, our planes are using more and more sustainable aviation fuel.
  •
 Affordable fares for all
  • More than 300 million passengers have travelled with us over the past 20 years. And we hope you'll join us for the journey during the next 20.

Meet Roger

Roger is an aircraft engineer and joined the Norwegian family in 2002. This autumn, he will have been with the company for 20 years. Roger’s interest in aviation began when he was just 10 years old, and in 1987 he started his career as a mechanic.

Roger has worked with Boeing 737s for 35 consecutive years and knows these aircraft like the back of his hand.

“After 20 years the memories are many and it’s hard to point at just one thing that I love about my work. I’ve always loved working with the aircraft but if I had to choose one thing, I would have to pick my colleagues. In many ways, they are my family and we’ve been through both ups and downs together. For the future, I'm looking forward to seeing the company continue to grow and welcoming new employees into the Norwegian family. ”

Meet Anders

Anders is a 20-year-old apprentice at Norwegian. Anders is from a small place on the west coast of Norway called Isfjorden and he moved to Oslo last year to begin his journey to become an aircraft mechanic. He is a part of our apprenticeship program and is one of the youngest employees in the company.

“Even though I'm new to the team, everyone has been very welcoming, and I already feel like a part of the Norwegian family. During my apprenticeship, my goal is to learn as much as possible about the industry and the Boeing 737 aircraft. Looking forward, I hope to become a licensed aircraft engineer in the company.”

Meet Viviann

Viviann kicked off her career in Norwegian as a member of cabin crew in 2002 and after a short while, she became a cabin chief. After 15 years in the cabin, she got the chance to join Norwegian’s recruitment team. Since 2017, she has held several positions and when the pandemic hit, she took on a role as both Deputy Chief Cabin Crew and Acting Team Lead for Crew Recruitment.

“It's been hard work starting up after a pandemic and reconstruction, but I see good things coming ahead. Norwegian is filled with passionate people who all care so much for this company. It's a business where we must always be adaptable and innovative, but that is also part of why I love this company and industry – there’s never a dull moment! I hope that we will continue to deliver excellent customer service, to be the preferred airline in the Nordics and beyond, and that we will be our customers’ and colleagues’ smart move.”

Aviation has always been a part of Viviann's life and she really believes that Norwegian is where she belongs, even after 20 years.

“I think it's my love for this company that makes me feel this way and the fact that I also have the best colleagues and passengers. It's never boring, there’s always a fast pace and we always strive to do things the best we can!”
