Top five tips if you’re a nervous flyer
Travelling by air is undoubtedly one of the most efficient ways of covering long distances. But if you find planes uncomfortable, are nervous or even scared of flying, even the shortest flight can be a challenge. Here are five strategies from first office in Norwegian, Amber Charlotte Visser, to make flying less daunting.
1. Choose a seat near the front
There are 31 rows of seats in Norwegian’s aircraft. The closer you sit to the front of the plane, the quieter it is. What’s more, the further forward you sit, the less turbulence you'll experience. You will also be sitting closer to the cockpit and galley, where the cabin crew are usually to be found throughout most of the flight.
2. Noise-cancelling earphones
You can hear a lot of unfamiliar sounds when flying, such as engine noise, the wing flaps moving and the air whooshing by outside.
If you find such noises disturbing, putting on noise-cancelling earphones can be a great idea if you’re afraid of flying. Try playing some music as well for a little distraction.
3. Inform the cabin crew that you're afraid of flying
There’s no reason to be embarrassed if you find flying unpleasant. Tell the crew, they’re there for your safety and comfort and can explain what you’re experiencing during the flight. Remember that they are well-used to fear of flying and are aware of most situations. It can also help to just put your fear into words.
4. Restrict your intake of coffee and alcohol
Even though it may be tempting to drink a cup of refreshing coffee for that feel-good factor, or a relaxing beer to calm your nerves before departure, both can actually cause your brain to feel more stress. Moderating your intake of both will help you feel calmer throughout the flight
5. Do research
Is there anything that bothers you or seems particularly worrying about a plane? Do some research before boarding and prepare for your flight.
Knowing how a plane works, about safety and the journey you are planning to take will reduce your fear. But remember to choose reputable sources and not just any website you come across with unverified information.
Enjoy your flight!
