Chicago at a glance
The crossroads between America’s east and west coasts, with its own stunning waterfront along Lake Michigan, Chicago became a boom town in the late 19th century and never looked back. Today, it retains the hard-working street cred of its industrial past while offering world-class culture and a food scene Bon Appetit magazine has called the best in the nation.
Local hot spot
Once-downtrodden, Logan Square on the city’s near-west side is now the epicenter of cool. Head to Milwaukee Avenue and stroll from California to Kimball Avenues for plenty of indie-minded shopping, hip restaurants, and even a renovated Art Deco movie theatre where you can sip local brews in its retro bar.
You probably didn’t know
Home to the first nuclear chain reaction, Chicago ushered in the Atomic Age in 1942 at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park on the city’s South Side. Former President Barack Obama also served as a law professor at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004.
