Top reasons to go to San Francisco

San Francisco – home of the Golden Gate

San Francisco is one of the world’s most dynamic cities, with stunning vistas, iconic architecture and a reputation for hip, quirky nonconformism. Norwegian offers flights from Barcelona to Oakland-San Francisco; from the airport you can reach Oakland in 15 minutes or San Francisco in less than half an hour.

Why visit San Francisco?

The city of San Francisco is a cultural feast – the birthplace of the Beat Generation and the heart of the hippie movement. In recent years San Francisco has become a hotbed of innovation, with numerous technology start-ups based in and around the city. When visiting San Francisco, the first item to check off on your list is the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, which links the city to Marin County. When built in 1937 was the world’s longest suspension bridge (a title it held until 1964). The iconic red colour of the bridge was suggested by engineer Irving Morrow, who thought grey was too boring. At the head of the Golden Gate Bridge is the Presidio, a 1500-acre park on the site of a former military fort. With miles of trails, a sandy beach and views out over the ocean and bay, it’s popular with visitors and locals alike.

San Francisco: things to do

Tucked away in the park are the Walt Disney Family Museum, and the headquarters of Star Wars producers Lucasfilm, whose Yoda fountain is a place of pilgrimage for sci-fi fans. Fisherman’s Wharf is unashamedly touristy – it’s no surprise, given the stunning views across the bay to the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. Clustered among the piers are historic ships, a sea lion colony and the Musée Mécanique, dedicated to vintage penny arcade games.

The journey to the wharf from downtown San Francisco on one of the world’s last manually operate cable cars is unmissable. A short boat ride across the San Francisco Bay is the forbidding island of Alcatraz; originally a fort, it gained notoriety in the 20th century as an inescapable prison for America’s worst criminals. Tours of Alcatraz Island leave from Pier 33 take in its cells and gardens, and explore its history as a military base and prison – and the tales of its infamous inmates.

San Francisco’s Union Square is a shopper’s delight, with major labels and department stores including Barneys New York and Macy’s. For a more relaxed name-brand retail alternative to Union Square, head over to the lower Pacific Heights section of Fillmore Street, which mixes independent shops with hip heavyweights. The quirkier Mission District is the place to go for unique boutiques and thrift-store bargains – and the infamous Mission burrito.
