Halloween history

Halloween is one of the most ancient holidays, celebrated on the 31st of October before All Saints Day on the 1st of November. The history of Halloween begins with the ancient pagan festival called Samhain and was previously celebrated by Celtic people in Scotland, Ireland and England. For Celts, the day of Halloween marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Over the years, this pagan ritual transformed into a night of parties, scary costumes, fun and sweet treats like pumpkin pie or a candy apple.

This Halloween you can have a unique experience in PortAventura Park in Barcelona. Take your costume and go to the Halloween Parade. Up to the 19th of November, PortAventura will be decorated with spiders and pumpkins. Be prepared for meetings with zombies and ghosts! If you do fly to Barcelona, you should definitely assist theatrical performances at the Lake of Horrors. Fly to Barcelona and have the biggest ever Halloween party!

New York never sleeps, and during the Halloween celebrations even less! If you fly to New York, grab a Halloween costume and participate in the spookiest procession of zombies at the Village Halloween Parade which starts at 7.00 p.m. and proceeds up Sixth Ave from Spring Street to 16th Street in Manhattan.

Before it gets dark, enjoy the autumn days in New York and visit the local markets with New York’s Harvest Festival and pumpkin patches. While staying in New York for Halloween, don’t forget to try the famous New York pumpkin cheesecake. Witness the pumpkin light show called The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze. This unique event showcases more than 7, 000 glowing pumpkins.

Enjoy fall foliage and Halloween celebrations in Central Park. As usual, New York’s Central Park will organise the traditional Pumpkin Flotilla, where 50 of them will set sail.

Celebrating Halloween in Los Angeles will be the best option if you want to have spooky fun. Go for the Halloween and Mourning Tours in the Heritage Square Museum where really dark celebrations will take place. You will see pumpkin patches and a demons parade in Griffith Park. If you have already decided on your Halloween costume, go to the Hollywood Monster Night at the Le Jardin, Hollywood, which will boast more than 1,000 attendees. There is also a Halloween all-night street celebration: the West Hollywood Halloween Carnival which will take place in Santa Monica. This event is free, but only if you arrived in your spectacular Halloween costume and make-up.

When you fly to Copenhagen this autumn, don´t miss the chance to visit the oldest park of attractions in the world, Tivoli Gardens, which organises Halloween parties for children and adults from the 13th of October till the 5th of November. The whole garden will be decorated with 20,000 pumpkins, spiders and magical creatures. If you do travel to Copenhagen for Halloween, you can experience the famous Monsters Night Out parade, Petzi, and you will see Denmark’s Giant Pumpkin Champion. You will not leave the Tivoli Gardens with an empty stomach. Tivoli Gardens offers plenty of restaurants with a “Halloween menu”, and Halloween market stalls have a large variety of sugar-roasted almonds and Danish cookies.
