Tampa at a glance

Why visit Tampa?

Tampa is sometimes seen as Florida’s “second city,” offering a more laid-back and affordable alternative to Miami for a holiday in Florida. With a rich history as a cigar-peddling boom town in the early 1900s, Tampa has grown into an international hub for business and leisure travel. Billion-dollar investments have recently seen redevelopment projects sprout around town, while its natural beauty is unlike any other place in the USA.

Local hotspots

Most of Tampa’s hotspots are rooted in history. When you travel to Tampa, make sure to visit Ybor City, home to historic buildings, trolley cars, and the century-old Columbia Restaurant, which still serves up some of the city’s best Cuban sandwiches. Downtown, the Tampa Theatre offers a beautifully refurbished venue inspired by the golden days of cinema. For a more modern hangout, try the converted warehouse at Armature Works with its dozen or so restaurants and bars. A stroll (or run) down Bayshore Boulevard is a must for exercise enthusiasts.

You probably didn’t know

Tampa is called Cigar City, thanks to the many cigar factories that populated the town in the 1900s. In a small cafe that catered to cigar workers, the first written instance of the modern day Cuban sandwich was recorded. Locals proudly to take credit for the invention of this delicious dish, which still attracts dedicated foodies.

Suggested reading/viewing

Before flying to Tampa, read Jack E. Davis’ The Gulf – this Pulitzer Prize-winning book recounts the history of America’s oft-forgotten sea and stresses the significance of the region’s unique ecosystems.

In the nonfiction book Cigar City Mafia, Tampa’s criminal past comes to life through Scott M. Deitche’s stories about the bootleggers, gamblers, and gangsters that once called Tampa home. For fiction, pick up a book from Tim Dorsey’s Serge series, which often feature Tampa Bay in darkly comedic detail.
