Undoubtedly one of the world’s most opulent castles, the royal Château de Versailles was the centre of French political power from 1682 to 1789. The Galerie des Glaces, a hall with 357 mirrors, is the castle’s most famous room but the perfectly maintained royal apartments, once inhabited by Louis XIV, are also fascinating. Finish your day trip with a stroll through the 250 acres of manicured gardens that come alive with fountain displays every Sunday at 3.30pm.

Take the RER (suburban train with stations around the city) Line C to Versailles – Rive Gauche (40 minute journey)..
