Why visit Krabi?
When many travellers picture a holiday in Thailand, it’s Krabi that immediately springs to mind: longtail boats on the shores of sugar-white beaches, limestone cliffs rising out of the bright blue sea, exotic fish and colourful coral. More than a living, breathing postcard, this bustling beach province is also the jumping off point to many of southern Thailand’s most popular islands, such as Koh Phi Phi.
When you’re visiting Krabi, head up the coast to Nopparat Thara. The beachfront in this area has grown in recent years but has yet to become overdeveloped – so it offers the same stunning scenery and convenience as the better-known Ao Nang, minus the tourist traps and crowds.
You probably didn’t know
Krabi might have the oldest history of continued human settlement in modern-day Thailand. Archaeological evidence found in Krabi’s Lang Rongrien Rockshelter – such as pottery, stone tools and bone fragments – dates as far back as 40,000 years, whilst other sites feature more recent, 2,000- and 4,000-year-old pottery and cave paintings.
