Hamilton/Toronto at a glance
Why visit Toronto?
Toronto is a chameleon, shifting its character with every street corner you turn. With a world-class food scene, internationally-acclaimed live music and theatre, and more sporting events than you’ll have time to attend, a holiday in Toronto offers something for everyone.
Head to the low-key Parkdale neighbourhood for quirky vintage shops; visit Casa Loma to discover a majestic century-old castle in the heart of the city, and explore Chinatown to sample Toronto’s delicious Asian cuisine. With countless parades and music and film festivals throughout the year, the biggest challenge is deciding the best time to visit Toronto.
Kensington Market is a must-visit on a trip to Toronto. This bohemian-feeling hideaway nestled just opposite Chinatown offers everything from world-class coffee shops to authentic Mexican restaurants to family-run suit store Tom’s Place.
You probably didn’t know
Don’t be surprised if you bump into a movie star in Toronto – the city is a hotbed for Hollywood shoots, often doubling for other locations. Shows filmed here include Suits, the legal drama through which the now-Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, shot to fame and The Handmaid’s Tale, based on the dystopian novel by Toronto writer Margaret Atwood. American Psycho, Good Will Hunting and Mean Girls were all also filmed in Toronto.
Before you fly to Toronto, read the following novels set in the city: In the Skin of a Lion by Michael Oondatje, Fifth Business by Robertson Davies and The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood. For a true taste of Toronto teen life, watch Degrassi, a TV drama about high schoolers in the big city. The comic book Scott Pilgrim vs The World (and its film adaptation) provide a hipster’s-eye-view of the city, showcasing many real Toronto locations.
