Why go?
Lanzarote has arguably the best climate in the world, almost no rain, and very little change between seasons.
Local hotspot
The Strip (Avenida Las Playas) in Puerto del Carmen is full of live music venues and late night bars.
You probably didn’t know
Lanzarote was used to road test NASA’s lunar rover in the 1970s.
Suggested reading
Lanzarote (Michel Houellebecq, 2000) a short, very funny novel set in the Canary Islands.
Things to do in Lanzarote
Barstro
A bistro that likes to keep you on your toes, Barstro, in the sleepy village of Nazaret, changes its menu every couple of weeks, dishing up scrumptious tapas and international cuisine.
La Bohemia
Plates groan under large chunks of perfectly prepared meat at La Bohemia, a barbecue restaurant in Costa Teguise that’s heaven for carnivores.
Meson La Taberna
Meson La Taberna in Marina Rubicon in Playa Blanca is a typical Canarian tapas bar. Its menu of the day is great value.
Café La Ola
The delightful Café La Ola backs onto the beach in Puerto del Carmen and has its own swimming pool for those keen to work up an appetite by doing laps. Stop for a drink or a cocktail, listen to chill-out sounds or enjoy a meal.
La Lapa
At La Lapa, a fish restaurant located in the coastal village of El Golfo, they cook whatever is the catch of the day, and the place is famous for its mixed fish platters. Sunday lunch, in particular, is a treat.
El Charco de San Ginés
If you want to experience Canarian nightlife, then head into the capital and visit El Charco de San Ginés. It’s the lagoon where fishermen moor their small boats, and it’s surrounded by dozens of bars. Try La Bulla, which is on a small balcony with views across the charco.
Puerto del Carmen
If you love to be with other holidaymakers, enjoying drinks and harbour views, stroll over to the Old Town and harbour in Puerto del Carmen. Irish, British, Belgian and German bars all compete with great music and cold beers. If we had to pick one place, it would be Bar Mardeleva for great cañas and tapas with a harbour view.
Briza Marina
Playa Blanca’s beach promenade is the best place on the island to watch the sun set. Pop into Briza Marina, say hello to the parrots, order a sundowner and feel the romance. Head for the town beach and walk along the promenade.
Pueblo Marinero
Pueblo Marinero is the heart of Costa Teguise. A traditional ‘plaza,’ designed by architect and artist Cesár Manrique, it’s now home to 20 bars and restaurants. Try Chispas, which is a tiny bar with the lowest drinks prices in town. Live music from the bandstand twice a week adds to the atmosphere.
Teguise Market
Everyone who comes to Lanzarote talks about Teguise Market. It has been running for over 20 years, and the former capital is taken over every Sunday morning by hundreds of stall holders. Everything from cheap tat to fake designer goods and excellent local craft products. Buses and taxis run there from all over the island on a Sunday.
Biosfera Shopping Centre
The Biosfera Shopping Centre in Puerto del Carmen has five floors of shops with well-known brands, several cool cafés and even a McDonald’s.
Marina Rubicon
Marina Rubicon is the island’s largest yacht marina. It’s full of designer boutiques, upmarket clothes retailers and at least 70 cafés and eateries, as well as a fabulous public outdoor swimming pool.
Deiland shopping centre
The Deiland shopping centre is in Playa Honda and is Lanzarote’s largest retail space. Spread over three floors, it’s very much aimed at locals rather than tourists, but that means pricing is keen and you’ll see ‘proper’ Spanish products on sale. There’s also a cinema that shows some English-language movies and it features the island’s only ten-pin bowling alley.
Lanzarote’s ‘official’ attractions
The island has seven ‘official’ attractions, all designed by Cesár Manrique, and very much in harmony with Lanzarote’s status as a Biosphere Reserve. Save them up and do two or three per visit to the island.
Watersports
There’s plenty to entertain watersports enthusiasts in Lanzarote, with a great surf beach, warm water scuba diving, wind and kite surfing.
Rancho Texas
Rancho Texas is Lanzarote’s theme park, with rides, many exotic animals, various wildlife shows and a big aquapark. You can easily spend a full day there.
Go-karting
Petrolheads will enjoy go-karting in San Bartolomé, where there’s a challenging circuit suitable for all ages.

- Carnival (February and March - it moves from resort to resort)
- Ironman Lanzarote (May)
