Top reasons to go to Miami

What you need to know about Miami before you visit

With over 30 miles of beaches and neon-tinged nightlife, Miami is a diverse and dynamic destination – but there’s more to the city than palm trees and cocktails. Before booking your holiday to Miami, plan your visit around these must-have experiences.

Best places to visit in Miami

Amid Miami’s bright lights and beachwear there’s a city full of art and culture. When visiting Miami’s South Beach, make sure to take in the iconic Art Deco architecture, which sprang up along the coastline during the Roaring Twenties. The best way to find out more about these buildings’ histories and famous residents is on the Art Deco Walking Tour, a daily 90-minute tour that showcases the Art Deco and Mediterranean Revival styles of the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. Tours start at 10:30am. You can also book an evening tour on Thursdays at 6:30pm, allowing you to take in the buildings’ fantastic neon lighting before hitting the clubs. The area is home to some of the city’s best nightclubs, including LIV, Mynt Lounge, Nikki Beach and SET.

If your flight to Miami – or the city’s nightlife – has left you feeling a little tired, visit Little Havana for a cafecito, the iconic (and strong!) Cuban coffee. The area is now home to many immigrants from Cuba and Central America; the locals head down to Domino Park to chat over a game of dominoes, while Viernes Culturales each month is a great chance to experience the area’s art, music and fresh street food. Miami is also making a name for itself as a showcase for street art – at Wynwood Walls, tired warehouse buildings have been transformed into gigantic canvases for graffiti artists including Shepard Fairey and Kenny Scharf. One of the best ways for visiting tourists to explore the area is by bike, with a guide from Wynwood Mural Tours. Alternatively, if you want the lowdown on the city’s LGBT scene, the Gay & Lesbian Walking Tour retells the history and civic contributions of Miami’s gay community, as well as visiting some of South Beach’s main gay hang-outs.

It isn’t just people who travel to Miami on Norwegian flights – Miami restaurant Joe’s Stone Crab imports nearly 10,000 kg (that’s 11 tons) of king crabs a year from Norway, flown over on Norwegian aircraft. The restaurant is a Miami institution – it’s said some residents eat there every day. The bill can be hefty and the wait for a table will test even the most patient diner, but dishes such as the stone-crab claw, lobster bisque and Key lime pie dessert will win you over. If you just can’t wait and don’t want to stand on ceremony, the less formal Joe’s Take Away next door will sate your appetite for seafood.
