West of the city at Høvikodden, close to Sandvika you’ll find the Henie-Onstad Art Centre. Founded in the 1960s by former Olympic figure skater Sonja Henie and located on a headland poking out into the fjord it’s home to one of Norway’s greatest private art collections. Including works by Picasso and Matisse, the massive collection is housed in an awe-inspiring Jon Eikvar and Sven Erik Engebretsen designed Neo Expressionist building which was built back in the 1960s. It’s situated 15 minutes away by car and 30 minutes or so by train from the city centre and as an added bonus you can combine a highbrow afternoon of art criticism with an ice cream and a barefoot walk on the nearby beach. Bliss!
