If you’ve a hankering to see windmills, this is where to come. A 10-minute walk from Koog-Zaandijk station, Zaanse Schans is a European Heritage village unchanged since before the industrial revolution. This open-air museum contains windmills brought here from elsewhere in the Zaanstreek, plus working ones you can visit. Traditional Dutch crafts such as clog-making can also be observed, and there’s a cheese farm and river cruises. To get here, it’s 20 minutes to Koog-Zaandijk, €3 one way from Amsterdam Centraal.
