Tarquinia

One of the biggest Etruscan towns of the 8th and 7th centuries BC, this is a great way to see some ancient Roman sites without some of the crowds you’ll usually find in the city. One of the main sights is the Necropolis, which holds around 6,000, around 200 of which are plastered with wall paintings showing banquets, athletes, funerals, dancing and erotic scenes. Look out too for the remains of the Queen’s Altar temple and, if you want to explore further, step into the museum. To get here, take the train from Termini, Ostiense or Trastevere stations.

Tarquinia.
