Amsterdam is both famous and infamous. It’s also full of surprises - here are our top seven tips!

Amsterdam was once the wealthy hub of the Dutch empire. The city is now famous for its lively squares, intricate waterways and outstanding museums. It mixes beauty and elegance with a thoroughly relaxed attitude.

Top tips:

1. Get on the water! Hop on a canal boat and admire the elaborate gables and gilded windows of Amsterdam’s townhouses – or do like the locals and rent a bike.

2. Visit Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder. This 17th century canalhouse contains a full-sized church crammed into the loft. The owner built it to escape religious prosecution.

3. Stop by the Bloemenmarkt, the last of the city’s floating markets.

4. Watch life go by on the Leidseplein. The square is at the centre of the city’s nightlife, with endless bars, cafés and restaurants.

5. Sample Amsterdam’s food scene. The Albert Cuypmarkt is a must for foodies.

6. Broaden your horizons in the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, home of Rembrandt’s Night Watch.

7. Find an Indonesian restaurant. As a result of its proud trading history, Amsterdam is known for having Europe’s best!
