Operations

The company holds two Air Operator’s Certificates (AOCs); one Norwegian (ICAO: NAX) and one Swedish (ICAO: NDC). An AOC is an operational and technical approval issued by a country’s Civil Aviation Authority which grants the holder the right to conduct commercial flights. The company is in the process of merging its two AOCs into one Norwegian AOC for efficiency purposes.

Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA is determined to focus its operations on its core competencies. The company has a strategy of extensive outsourcing, most notably handling services on all airports the airline serves and heavy maintenance. Line maintenance is performed in-house for efficiency purposes.

The current majority of the fleet consists of dry-leased aircraft except from five aircraft which are on the company’s balance sheet. Norwegian has an order with the Boeing Company for the purchase of 42 Boeing 737-800 aircraft between 2009 and 2014.
